Dr John W. Harris, Principal 1996 - 2003

We are sorry to share the news of the passing of our former Principal Dr John W. Harris. He was Principal of Wesley College from 1996 to 2003.

During his tenure in the College he oversaw the development of the Library Block with its fabulous top floor dual aspect library space, a Music and Arts Centre with the GB Shaw Auditorium and a Technology Building. He also oversaw the establishment of the new Board of Management, initiated the first College Website and then began the widespread use of technology in all aspects of College life. His carefully devised appointment schedule for the Parent Teacher meetings is still in place and has been appreciated by many over the years.

Dr Harris was committed to providing a broad education and particularly interested in music and drama.  He and his wife Barbara directed many school productions notably The Pirates of Penzance, My Fair Lady and Oliver.

Dr Harris joined the Board of Governors and Board of Management in 2005, and agreed to take on the position of chairperson of both bodies for six years, enabling a co-ordinated and structured approach to governance in Wesley College at this time.

A distinguished educationist, Dr Harris had formerly been Principal of Newpark School and Sandford Park.  He was seconded to work as advisor to Ministers for Education Gemma Hussey and John Boland in the 1980s.  Noted for his progressive views on education, Dr Harris was a pioneer championing one of the earliest Transition Year Programmes.

Dr Harris was unfailingly courteous, tolerant and kind to others at all times.  As Principal his contribution to Wesley College was by any measure significant, achieved over a relatively short period of seven years.

The College extends the condolences of the whole community to his wife Barbara, his two children Karen and Russell and to all of his grandchildren.
